I found a
whole classroom set of this book at the 2nd and Charles off
Wadsworth in Littleton. They had all come from the Mackintosh Academy which is
a PreK-8 grade school that supports IB programs ( https://mackintoshacademy.com/about-us/mission/
). The reviews of the school seems to be on the extremes
with people either really loving the school or being not pleased to say the
least.
I found it intriguing that this school choose this book
to teach its students with and I wonder what book they replaced it with. I
found this book being one of the best early history books for kids that I have
come across. I felt that it did a good job of introducing kids to Native American
history while then expanding into the conquest of the Americas. It did go into
the negative aspects of what the Europeans did while still keeping it PG. This
book came out in the early 2000s and I would say that it was ahead of its time
in giving a more native voice to the teaching of history. There were only a few
things that could use improvement, so I would give it 4 stars out of 5 or a B+.
