12/7/22: "How to Combat the High Schoolization of the University"- Most of my career in higher ed I have watched how college has changed to coddle students. Schools have stopped holding students responsible for their own education and related actions. I have always thought that one of the most important thing that students should walk away with from a college is the knowledge of how to adult. Instead educational is leaving them not being ready for the "real world." https://www.insidehighered.com/blogs/higher-ed-gamma/how-combat-high-schoolization-university?utm_source=Inside+Higher+Ed&utm_campaign=8fe23ab713-DNU_2021_COPY_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1fcbc04421-8fe23ab713-237144525&mc_cid=8fe23ab713&mc_eid=ba665d78a3 "Men are dropping out of the labor force because their upset about their social status, according to a new study"- This is an interesting read because it looks at issues around gender and degrees. At the same time it has flaws because it assumes that society views degrees with respect which is not true of large segments of it. Just look at recent history and you can see large groups working to devalue education. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/men-dropping-labor-force-because-224319223.html
12/8/22: "Political Divides Grow: More college-educated voters are voting for Democrats, while those without a degree prefer Republicans. Colleges and universities are stuck in the middle"- This supports what I have been saying for a long time. It is very obvious which party appreciates education and has you learn more you realize that many of the things that the Republican party supports is just wrong on many different levels. - https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2022/12/08/growing-divides-among-voters-challenge-higher-ed?utm_source=Inside+Higher+Ed&utm_campaign=8fe23ab713-DNU_2021_COPY_02&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1fcbc04421-8fe23ab713-237144525&mc_cid=8fe23ab713&mc_eid=ba665d78a3
12/9/22: "Academic arrogance: the school that grants you PH D thinks it's too good to hire you" - I can tell you as some who has worked in higher education for over 15 years at different schools that this does happen. Even school systems do this as well and it also impacts employees trying to move up within them. For example if you are an employee at any of the 13 community colleges and you put in an application to CCCS (system office), it better not have any typos in it because they will automatically kick you out because they don't want employees that make typos. The problem is that all people are human and make mistakes. I have seen many announcements and one-on-one emails where there are typos comming out of CCCS not to mention them passing on bad information in general and not being held accountable for it. Real employees are busy and typos happen in the real world. People make unrealistic expectations of people. This is a form of bias. If you have never read a book that had typos in though it went through an editing process, then you haven't read enough. Even though I have several degrees and have been published, going through the peer review process, I still make typos. I'm human. I'm sure many of the blogs I run have typos, and that even happens to those that write a lot. Those who judge others on typos are discriminating on them using a form of personal bias. They are holding them to standars few humans can meet. There are double standards in the hiring processes in education. I have been on hiring committees where HR makes the whole process a nightmare and good workers are removed because of biases of HR employees and people on hiring committees. This article did hit close to home with me because of my experiences within the past few months as both a hiring manager and has an applicant. There are really bad issues right now in the hiring practices at colleges and people applying to work in higher education should be aware of this. https://bigthink.com/thinking/school-phd-too-good-for-you-academic-arrogance/
